The Joys of Being Home
These people decided to come to the park in the middle of my street and set up camp to sell the junk from their storage unit. None of us knew who they were and almost no people came to their garage sale because frankly it is a horrible location. But the concensus of the neighborhood was that it was kind of rude and no one was happy about it. Someone actually called the cops.
Yet another reason I don’t like being here. A little back story first. My hair is green but it has grown out a lot, the front is blondish anyway. So, if I have my hair tied back in a pony tail or a braid, from the front my hair looks normal but the back is still green. This has shocked and scared some people, which I can handle. I even got a kick out of one woman’s reaction. But most of it is just the same bullshit I have been putting up with my whole life here and have learned how to handle it. But this one incident at the grocery store really got to me. I was at the grocery store with my mother doing the shopping for the week. Next to me was this 14 year old girl who was there with her mother too. I turned my head to ask my mother a question and I guess that is when the girl saw my hair for the first time because I heard this gasp. I turned around and this girl was all but jumping up and down with joy. She started pointing and said “Mom! Mom! Look her hair is green! Her hair is green!” I just kinda grinned and took it because even though she was annoying me at least she was happy. But her mother grabbed her arm and pulled her away saying “No, come on, Don’t talk to her” to her daughter as she dragged her away. She was speaking much louder than she intended and when she realized that I, and everyone else, could hear her, she stopped and smiled a nervous grin at me and was quickly on her way.
The time I got a kick out of was before that. I went to the chiropractor and the pastor’s wife works there. She had me lay down on the table and she saw my hair for the first time and shouted in surprise “your hair is green” and I just went “yeah”. She recovered and said “just thought you should know”. And we have been cool ever since.
If anyone should find themselves in Brookings (yeah like that is going to happen), I recommend they eat at Boogie Board. It is a surfing themed restaurant that is under new ownership. It has always been surfing themed but it is more intense now. Anyway, they are a sandwich place like subway except the sandwiches are on bagels. It's really good.
My mother suggested that I get out more and that I spend more time with my grandmother, so I started going with her when she goes to the casino every week. She gives me money to play with and we go on Tuesdays because the casino gives you five bucks for playing on Tuesdays on her birthday we went on double points Monday. They now have these nifty leashes for your casino cards.
Just when I had no hope of being able to find anything in Brookings and thought I was fated to buying everything online with no sense of security and huge shipping charges, I was pleasantly surprised. I managed to wander into the scrapbooking store downtown and it has changed a lot since last time I was in it when it first opened. It has a wide variety of anything you could think of at competitive prices. Usually if I do find something in Brookings, especially art supplies, there is no selection and they want way too much for it. But you pay the horrendous price because they are the only game in town.
A lot has been happening with the neighborhood. The neighbors I really liked across the street that had only been here a year are gone, someone else moved in and they have already moved out and put the place up for sale. The neighbors next to us that we where having so much trouble with seem to have gone…for now. And the neighbors on the other side of us have moved. It is really sad. They have lived in the neighborhood almost as long as mom has. While they were taking care of the property they were buying up north I watched their dogs. They have three of them. They brought me back goodies, like huckleberry honey and a huckleberry candle, but it doesn’t make up for them leaving. They are both retired now and bought some property up north that they are going to build a house on. The place looks so naked now. They are truely missed.
