Friending Policy: As long as I know how you found me, and you're over 18, I will generally friend you back. I do appreciate if you comment (or DM) to be added.

My journal is partially flocked and partially public.

Mostly, I post semi-random things about my life; things the cats did, lunches with my mother, movies I saw, local events, that kind of thing. I (try to) do a weekly “Good Things” post and a weekly update to my goals. But I do memes and challenges too.

YouTube Recs 1

spiralicious: Smoking Mona Lisa (Mona Lisa)
My plan had been for this to be a daily thing for the month of June, but things didn't work out that way. I will still be putting up my 30 LGBTQ+ YouTube Creator Recs anyway. It will just extend past June. My reason for focusing on YouTube creators is that YouTube is suppressing queer content across the platform and it's not like that's something that magically stops being a problem at the end of June anyway.

1. Kaz Rowe (they/them)

Their YouTube content is long-form history essays, usually focusing on the weirder parts of history and LGBTQ+ history, describing their own content as "creative lectures on weird, queer, or forgotten history."

I've been a long time fan of their well-researched content, costumes, and thoughtfully detailed sets. They are clearly passionate about the subjects they cover and their sources are always cited in the descriptions of their videos.

My top three favorite videos are:

The 1840s Lesbian "Mobs" That Took Over Prisons

Why Did So Many Lighthouse Keepers "Go Mad"?

A Look at Queerness in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

Outside of YouTube, they are a cartoonist, illustrator, historical researcher, and self-described train appreciator. They have an ongoing, long form urban fantasy webcomic, Cunning Fire. They frequently create many comics dedicated to LGBTQ+ historical figures. And they've written a graphic novel, Liberated: The Radical Art and Life of Claude Cahun.

(Doing this on my phone means no links for now sorry)

Halfway to Halloween

Do you like haunted houses?
Yes/No - Yes, I do, I don't go to them often because it's hard for me to find them where I can actually go to them.

Halloween Hunting this year?
Yes/No - Yes, technically. I go Halloween Hunting every year, but the results locally tend to be really disappointing most years, so I'm not sure how much effort I'm going to into it this year.

Candy Corn:
Love It/Hate It - My feelings are split. I enjoy candy corn as an aesthetic, but abhor it as a food substance.

Favorite Costume:
When I was 4ish, one of my cousins was on the high school dance team and one of their routines was a tribute to Batman. My mother got roped into making costumes for the team. So for Halloween that year, my mother downsized the pattern for me and made it out of black trash bags so it would also be waterproof.

Spooky Bucket List Item This Year:
Finish my All Things Halloween junk journal.

Book or Movie that SCREAMS Halloween:
The 2 movies I will always associate to Halloween are The Nightmare Before Christmas & Rocky Horror Picture Show

What does Halloween mean to you?
Growing up, it meant a rare opportunity to be myself.

Message Catch Up

To my embarrassment, my DW inbox has ballooned up to 261 messages, I have a stack of mail to reply to/let people know I got, and I'm not sure how many emails (and I'm pretty sure I have some text messages to reply to).

Assuming my anxiety & internet connection cooperates, I'm going to be catching up on all of that over the next few days.

I am relatively okay and I am not hinting about anything about myself, but last week a few events happened (which are not my stories to share) that prompted me to remind everyone to please check on your quiet friends. Quiet does not necessarily mean everything is a-okay. Nor does it necessarily mean anything is wrong. But sometimes people are quiet because they are having trouble reaching out or "don't want to be a bother," and it can start a self-fulfilling cycle of feeling isolated. It can slip the minds of the best of and most well meaning of friends to check in on the ones you don't hear from.

Tea Month 2025:Tea 7

Tea Review
Name: Chamomile
Brand: Celestial Seasonings
Type: herbal
Tea bag

Notes:
Another flavor from the herbal tea sampler. This is another nostalgia tea for me, sort of. When I was small, whenever I was sick, this is tea Mom gave me. (Celestial Seasonings was one of the only tea brands available locally.) But, I doubt I ever tasted what it actually tasted like because when I was sick, my mom automatically gave me hot tea and a popsicle. Whenever the popsicle wasn't in my mouth, it was in the tea. This is kinda genius - keeps the toddler/preschooler from making a mess with melting popsicle, sweetens and regulates the temperature of the tea, keeps the dog from stealing the popsicle. This means all of my childhood chamomile tea was flavored with whatever popsicle I had though.

Compared to other chamomile teas, this one's flavor is very light, just a hint of the flavor, but still soothing.

Tea Review
Name: Peppermint
Brand: Celestial Seasonings
Type: herbal
Tea bag

Notes:
Another tea from the herbal tea sampler. I almost didn't review this one because it's a tea staple in our house, but I also hadn't reviewed it before. So, here we are. As you may have gathered from other posts, I kind of live off peppermint tea from time to time. Celestial Seasonings' peppermint tea is one of the few that it's sole ingredient is peppermint instead of a blend, which is nice. The flavor is a bit sharper than other brands, which is neither good not bad. It does mean that if you accidentally severely over brew it, it's, um, just trust me, don't. That being said, it's a good tea, a solid tea, a tea that will be there for you when others have betrayed you with weird blends when all you want is something comforting. It is in my top 3 of peppermint teas and is always in my tea stash.

Tea Review
Name: Calm
Brand: TAZO
Type: herbal
Tea bag

Notes:
I have no idea where this tea came from. It was just a lone tea bag in a sandwich bag, by itself with no packaging in my tea stash. Luckily, it still had its tag on its string so I could identify it. (Also, I'm not in the habit of drinking random unidentified tea.) From looking at the bag and by flavor, it's a chamomile blend of some kind. It's a bit on the strong side for chamomile, but not unpleasantly so. The flavor can only really be described as "floral," but not in a you feel like you are drinking potpourri or soap or grandmother's perfume kind of way. It was okay.

Tea Review
Name: Lemon Zinger

Notes:
Also from the herbal tea sampler. I have had lemon zinger before, but it's been probably about 20ish years. My mother used to make sun tea with it and raspberry zinger (raspberry lemon zinger?) regularly in the summer, but I can't remember her having it in the house since before I went to college.

We know I love a lemon tea. This one is very lemony with a little bite. It's a good tea. Would recommend unless you are avoiding hibiscus or rosehips.

Tea Review
Name: Honey Vanilla Chamomile
Brand: Celestial Seasonings
Type: herbal

Notes:
The same person who gifted me the Black Cask Bourbon tea also gifted me a Celestial Seasonings herbal tea sampler. This is from that sampler. It is a really lovely tea. No single flavor is particularly strong, giving a "morning pastry with light icing" vibe, but without being overly sweet. The citrus smell from the orange peel comes out more in the aroma than the taste and is very pleasant.

Tea Review
Name: HT: Unique & Uncommon Tea Blends: Black Cask Bourbon (Smoky Black Tea with Vanilla and Caramel)
Brand: Harney & Sons Fine Teas
Type: black tea blend
Tea bag

Notes:
This tea was gifted to me by a generous person via Holiday Wishes. It is absolutely delicious and I love it. The smokey scent and flavor bring me back to the happy nostalgia bits of childhood, bringing to mind wood stoves, campfires, and pipe tobacco. It is a little intense for everyday drinking, but it's so good.

I also have to give a shout-out to the gorgeous tin the tea came in, which I will definitely be keeping after the tea is gone. It mostly black with copper colored metallic accents and small blue filigree designs. It also includes a lot of tea information including character description of the tea (prominent notes of vanilla, caramel atop a base of smoky black tea. Perfect for sipping slow and steady, as a bourbon should be.), ingredients, brewing instructions, storage guidelines, caffeine content, and the "Mike Harvey's Tea Rating." It rates the tea on briskness - does your mouth pucker?, body - does the tea fill your mouth?, and aroma - does the tea have a robust scent?. This tea got 2/5 in briskness, 2/5 in body, and 4/5 in aroma.

California Fires

Mon, Jan. 13th, 2025 01:31 am
spiralicious: Cereal Killer Mask (Default)
Based on some messages I've been getting, I just want to say that I am okay. Thank you for checking on me. I really appreciate it. However, the absolutely devastating fires in California right now are nowhere near me. On an absolutely perfect day with zero traffic or road construction, absolutely flying down the highway, it was be a 12 hour drive to the fires. (777.4 miles, says Google.) In that respect, right now, I am good.

My county is one of several in Oregon that is sending personnel and equipment to assist in fighting the fires. Specifically, we seem to be sending water tenders. There is a conspiracy theory floating around that the vehicles are going into California, getting mandatory smog checks, and sent back for failing them, but this is not true. (In California, vehicles registered in California must pass smog checks. Oregon vehicles that are registered outside of Portland do not.) The vehicles are getting safety checked to make sure they can survive driving the almost 800 miles to get to where they are needed before they go, as they are not designed for long distance journeys.

All that being said, I have been compiling information about what is needed and ways to help. To my knowledge, all the information I will be giving is still accurate, but things change very quickly in these situations. There is a lot of info here. Please share it where you think it would be most useful.

It A LOT so I put it under a cut

Tea Review
Name: Peach Honey Chamomile Tea
Brand: Sun Orchard (?)
Type: herbal tea/juice blend
Premade in a jug

Notes:
When I bought this, I hadn't planned on doing a review on it. It was seriously priced to move in the refrigerator section at the discount grocery and it looked like a half gallon jug of sweet tea, which is a rarity here. Then I drank it. It was an odd experience. Cold chamomile tea is odd to start with, but it was also thick, close to syrup. This prompted me to read the ingredients: brewed herbal tea (water, chamomile flowers), sugar, peach puree, lemon juice, honey, natural flavors.

After I got over the initial surprise, it was actually quite good. It's not really sweet. You can clearly taste the chamomile and the honey. The peach is more of a hint of something. It was better mixed with lemonade flavored sparkling water.

The other weird thing was there was no obvious brand. The from label was just a picture of a peach with "Peach Honey Chamomile Tea" written across it. The back label was just the ingredients list with tiny type below that was the address from Sun Orchard LLC. Not even nutrition facts.

Day 5: Talk About Books This Year

I started the year in 4 book clubs. Now, I'm only in one. Funnily enough, the Pub Grub Book Club was the last one I joined, the one I heavily debated joining, and it's the only one I'm still in. It's run by the library, but is held at a local Lord of the Rings themed bar. We only read graphic novels and we vote on them from a list each month. In November, we had 2 books to discuss because we had a tie vote and just elected to read them both instead of picking between them. It technically has 12 members, but 5 of us show up consistently. It's a good number. They are also the reason I read Fourth Wing. Everyone else in group had already read it and strongly encouraged me to do so, with plans to discuss it after the next book club meeting. Unfortunately, the next book club meeting was cancelled do you the group leader having a family emergency.

The Freshly Written Book Club was a monthly book club at the library where we read books that had made best sellers lists and discussed if they lived up to the hype. It fizzled out on its own during the summer for several reasons. One being that it had been going for several years already and while it's normal for people to come and go as commitments change, no one was coming in to replace the members that were leaving. We had several books that were complete duds in a row, which made even more people lose interest. Also, this year, we had to change how we acquired books for book club and it caused massive delays in actually getting the books, to the point that we were never getting the books on time anymore and for the last meeting we actually met, we hadn't gotten the books in time enough to actually read them before the meeting.

The Haunted Book Club was an online book club being hosted by a YouTuber called Alt Knots. She is best known for being a spooky crochet/yarn/fiber arts influencer. The books were always interesting picks, but trying to keep up with book selection and the live discussion streams got to be too much for me. In order to stay on top of things, you had to be constantly monitoring her YouTube channel, her Instagram, her website, and her newsletter. I just didn't have the energy to be that invested and I have no idea if the book club is still going, but I do still follow her on YouTube and Instagram.

Roll for Reading Book Club died before it really got a chance to get started. We were supposed to meet every other month. Basically, there was a master sheet of fantasy books, each numbered, and we rolled a d20 to determine what book we were reading. We each read a different book and discussed it with the others at the next meeting. It was intentionally kept small, but this back fired because after someone moved and another member never showed up ever, we were down to 2 members and the library could no longer justify running it, as 1 of the members was library staff running it as part of his work schedule when he could have been put on other projects. We managed to have 2 book discussion meetings, and selected a 3rd book for each of us, we never got to discuss.

I'm also doing [personal profile] kingstoken's reading bingo, but I haven't updated my card since June, so I'm not sure how I am doing with it.

Our library did a Summer reading challenge this year. It was based on the number of books you read and you got enamel pins as prizes. (There was a random assortment to choose from.) You got one for signing up, you got one for hitting the halfway point, and one for finishing. You also got a bonus one for signing up on the first day. Your official tracker card also served as a raffle ticket for a gift basket when you turned it in. I had completely forgotten about that part and ended up winning! It was huge. It came in a Pizza Planet (from Toy Story) tote bag. Attached on the outside were 3 Pokémon enamel pins and a knock off brand tamigatchi. Inside was a zen magnet poetry kit, 2 different escape room games, 3 books, & 1 - 1000 piece puzzle of cats on a bookshelf.

Surprisingly, there was no Halloween reading challenge at the library this year. There usually is one.

Right now, the library is doing what they are calling the Golden Ticket Challenge. Your tracker this time looks like a little road map with gold scratch off spots. For every 30 minutes of reading, you scratch off a spot and have a chance at winning a prize (it says small or medium prize on the sheet and I know you pick them off a cart, but neither my mother or myself have claimed any of our earned prizes yet, so I don't know what they are). The end of the trail is 9 hours of reading, which then you can turn in your tracker for a large prize for finishing. You can claim your prizes as you go or all at once when you are done. On top of this, there are 30 golden tickets hidden in books and audio books throughout the library. If you check out a book with one in it, you get a special prize.

One of my main reading goals this year was to complete any ongoing series I've been reading. The only one I've come close to finishing is Lumberjanes, which I did focus on a bit more heavily, as it's the series' 10th anniversary. All I need is the last collected volume and I will have finished the graphic novel series. I've had it on hold for awhile, but it's still just marked as pending.

My Good Reads goal this year was 40 books. I haven't updated it in a few months, but I know I have surpassed it.

My main way of tracking books this year was with the Beanstack app. I do dearly love it, but it hard logged me out in September and after the first couple of attempts to log back in didn't work, I got too busy to deal with it and it kind of got back burnered. I will get back in & get it updated, but my stats are going to be way out of wack.

I used my history on my library account to help make this list, as my physical tracking of my reading after June is a bit spotty, so there are possibly some non-library books missing, but the complete list should actually be pretty complete.

Day 4: Talk About Television This Year

I watch a lot of TV. I need background sounds to function and TV seems to work the best.

This year, I had several extended housesitting gigs that changed up available shows to me, allowing me to revisit some old favorites and explore some new things. Our TV antenna also stopped picking up a signal from June to September. We never did find out why. It did mean we started checking out even more DVDs from the library than usual.

Currently, we are doing rewatches of Poirot, Murdoch Mysteries, Midsomer Murders, and Bob's Burgers. We had intended to watch them all in order from beginning to end, but since we've seen them all already, we are just getting what is available at the library in as close to chronological order as we can. Luckily, I've made a tracker to keep track of what seasons we've watched to make it a little easier.

Earlier in the year, we binged the complete Downton Abbey series, including the movies.

I realized I should clarify that the we is my mother and myself.

During one of my housesitting gigs, I got the opportunity to watch the complete 1943 Batman serials and the complete 1949 Batman and Robin serials. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, but had never gotten a chance.

This summer, I finally decided to watch the final season of Walker, mostly just to see how they ended it. I never did make up my mind if I liked it or not. Nor could I figure out how it survived as a show for so long.

I have sort of stopped watching the 1950s Adventures of Superman & 1960s Batman TV shows. I still love them, they are just on at really inconvenient times for me right now.

Animation Domination is still must watch television in our house. Mom and I have been watching The Simpsons together every week since it started (baring periods we didn't have TV or I was living elsewhere or it wasn't on). Mom doesn't really care for the rest of the current lineup, which this year has been Grimsburg, Krapopolis, Bob's Burgers, The Great North, The Simpsons, and Universal Basic Guys, depending on the time of year. Grimsburg and Universal Basic Guys are new shows. Grimsburg's first season aired from January to May and, while it grew on me, I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Universal Basic Guys premiered this fall and I don't really care for it, but I couldn't really tell you why. I look forward to the rest of the shows though.

Another housesitting find was Moosemeat & Marmalade. It "brings two very different chefs [Art Napoleon, seasoned hunter & bushcook of Canada, and Dan Hayes, classically trained French chef of the UK] together to explore culture, culinary traditions and really good food." I found it on FNX, First Nations Experience. A television channel devoted to exclusively indigenous content and it's amazing.

I also came across The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe on Cartoon Network while housesitting and couldn't get enough of it.

Svengoolie (horror movie host) celebrated his 45 anniversary this year. The show also brought on 3 new sidekicks. For October they also brought back Svengoolie's Halloween Boo-Nanza on METV. For the month of October, it focuses on Halloween episodes of its regular classic TV programming, Svengoolie gets a double feature Saturday nights. Svengoolie also go a new spin off show this year called House of Svengoolie. It's essentially the same show, just hosted by the new sidekicks instead of Svengoolie himself. They did a very lovely tribute to Jim Henson and to puppets. (Two separate tributes) After Svengoolie, there are late night show binge specials featuring a different show each week, like one week it will be Kolchak the Night Stalker all night, the next, it will Twilight Zone all night, etc. And the week of Halloween, Toon in With Me becomes Hallo-Palooza, the morning cartoons have a different Halloween related theme each day and the hosts do a week long bit of their own. This year it was a scavenger hunt at haunted places and trivia.

This fall, the first season of Murder in a Small Town & the second season of Accused (US version) premiered on a channel I get. I thoroughly enjoyed watching those each week.

At two different housesitting gigs I got to watch Toonami for the first time in years. The highlights for me were getting to watch the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba (Swordsmith Village Arc) s4 premier and the Rick and Morty the Anime Japanese Language Premier.

I've also been enjoying The Penguin, but I haven't finished it yet.

For Batman Day, I tried to binge as much of Batman the Animated Series as I could, and I think I only made it to episode 19. I haven't watched it since it was new, so that was fun.

One place I housesat had a large selection of free channels that came with their TV that just played a single show continuously in random episode order. My favorites for background noise were the My Little Pony channel that aired both the original series and Friendship is Magic, the Murder She Wrote channel (I loved that show as a kid), and the Midsomer Murders channel, which was having some sort of contest because of the upcoming 25th season/series. I also had a lot of fun with Retro Crush, which was subbed anime.

See post about movies in 2024/day 3 for note about complete list.
