At the time in which I finished my fic for the Dean Winchester Big Bang, I was very emotional about it. The fic had been exceptionally difficult for me and I was incredibly proud of it at the same time. I felt this need to and planned this big post that was basically a giant, messy, gushing Oscar acceptance/prom queen speech at the time. Then life went sideways immediately afterwards, as it tends to do, and I never got a chance.
I am still incredibly proud of my fic, so almost two months later, here is that post (though a bit toned down).
The road to finishing Purgatory Comes in Many Forms was a long one. It began when I was late to watching season 8, episode 19 of Supernatural, “Taxi Driver.” The first thing I saw when I turned the TV on was the scene where Dean cuts off Benny's head and the only thing I could think was, “I must ship these two, I must ship them hard.” The next day I wrote the original draft of the opening of the fic. As usual, I could not write it in a linear format, so over the next few years, I wrote random sections of the story.
cheshirejin says I write in quilt squares.
By early 2015, the fic was still largely unfinished and I was frustrated with it.
vexed_wench pointed out a new big bang she had found that looked promising; it had a very long, clearly defined schedule and I had a fic I was determined to finish. I am ridiculously picky about what bangs I do, but I needed more motivation to finish this fic that had gone from a spur of the moment need to write to a mission I felt like I was failing. At the last minute before sign ups closed, I talked myself into it.
The draft I started with was very different from the end product posted on AO3. It was so dark, its early readers and I had been referring to it as “the one in which Dean will probably eat his gun,” it jumped back and forth between Dean and Sam's point of view, and there was originally a whole weird thread of plotline where Dean had an affair with Kevin. Thankfully, it went through many, many rewrites. It shows a range of emotion I didn't know I was capable of writing. The “weird” format ended up working in the end. I got the pregnancy as realistic and accurate as I could make it. Everyone stayed in character (as much as possible under the circumstances). And, weirdly, the part I am most proud of, I worked in the word “autocannibalism.” It is also the longest thing I have every written to date. Did I include everything I had planned? Thank god, no. That would have ruined it and that is what side fics are for. I created a very solid fic I am proud of, but it took a lot of people to get there.
First I want to thank my artist,
sillie82. I can tell you for a fact that I would have never finished without her. It was a very difficult time for me and I was going to drop out multiple times and each time the only reason I didn't was because every time I went to email her to warn her that I was going to, I would see the rough sketches she'd sent me at various stages and I loved them so much, I knew I had to finish. Also, she was a joy to work with and is a very nice person. Go marvel at her artwork here.
A big thank you goes to
lynx212 who volunteered to beta this thing while she was betaing my horror bang fic last year, (another fic I am not sure how I manged to pull off and am proud of). You did a lot to whip it into shape, offered great suggestions, and your feedback was incredibly helpful.
Another big thank you goes to
cheshirejin. She hopped up and finished betaing my fic at the last minute when Lynx had to go the emergency room. Technically, it was four days before I had to post, but I only had internet access that day until posting, meaning, it was the only day I would have been able to get any correction notes to make. She also had to beta two of the most difficult scenes for me to write, which means I was a bit more of a pest than I should have been. She is awesome for putting up with me. It was also a big relief when she said she liked it and thought it was a good fic, because she doesn't like Mpreg and she isn't one to blow smoke up your ass.
vexed_wench deserves a big thank you for putting up with my insecurities through the whole process. Also, for alpha reading the rough drafts before check in points and yelling at me over things like forgetting about Kevin and checking for incharacterness. Also, for helping me figure out how to throw a secret baby shower Jody Mills style.
My mother deserves a shout out for reading over the “final” rough draft to make sure it read like a complete story before it went to my beta. Also for having fun and entertaining questions like, “what does fugly mean?” and “why does Dean have so much alcohol?”
Thank you to all the contributors to all the mommy forums I lurked around and scoured for information that unknowingly helped with my research. And to my friend Mandy who was pregnant pretty much the entire length of the bang, whose oversharing contributed to my fic quite a bit.
Thank you to all my cheerleaders, both on my flist and off. I needed every last one of you.
Thank you to everyone who commented on the fic.
And thank you to all those early, early readers of the fic (
kiramaru7,
cheshirejin, and
vexed_wench ) who thought I had something going.
