Challenge #2

In your own space, write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom.

I had a fairly lengthy something for this about the 1950s Superman TV series, Adventures of Superman, focusing on non-canon shipping potential, especially Jimmy Olsen/Clark Kent(Superman). It seems to be gone. I thought I had backed it up multiple places, but I can't find it anywhere.

But I have gotten a request to write a promo for the pairing Sam Winchester/Rowena MacLeod from Supernatural. So let's give it a try.

Who are they: Sam Winchester is the younger and taller of the Winchester brothers. He is a monster hunter, initially reluctantly, continuing the family business. He did briefly quit the life to go to college and law school. While definitely capable in a fight, he tends to favor the research and lore side of things.

Rowena MacLeod is a witch, born sometime in the 1600s, who first appeared in season 10. She is also the mother of Crowley, King of Hell, and later becomes Queen of Hell herself. She is extremely powerful, but volatile. She starts as a show antagonist, but eventually becomes part of the family, as it were.

Why they go together:
(It might be tiny bit spoilery, so under a cut for people who want to avoid that)

They are not the most obvious pairing and they are frequently horrible to each other, especially in the beginning, and I never said this would be the healthiest relationship, however:

I hate to use "the vibes," but yeah, the vibes. They have good chemistry together and it is different between the two of them than it is with other characters, including some of their canon pairings. There is a mutual respect (even if it comes with some warranted mistrust) between them. She trusts Sam with her most sacred things - her magic and her life, which she entrusts to no one else, besides herself. Most other characters Rowena treats as though they are simply silly children.

They compliment each other, sort of. Both Sam and Rowena have a tendency to be stubborn and overdo things. Both regularly go too far in pursuit of their goals, but, in a way, they are capable of balancing the other one out, when they want to. Though, this can sometimes lead to an frightening battle of wills.

No one has to lie about their identity or have the big "monsters are real" talk with their partner. No one has to explain the weird things they've been doing. Which equals a lot less lying and hiding.

They are also perfectly capable of taking care of themselves should something go sideways or something attack. That isn't to say neither of them can't be injured or die, but it's not the same kind of concern as if their romantic partner was a civilian.

Sam has a history of hooking up with female "monster" characters.

They have bonded over their mutual traumas inflicted upon them by Lucifer.

Sam looks at Rowena's books and magical processes with a kind of awe.

Sam gave her the ritual to regain her full powers.

Sam is also the one to comfort Rowena when she is grieving Crowley.

Rowena strives to be a better person from interacting with Sam (and Dean), emphasized when she chooses to stay and find a way to help instead of running, like she would in the past.

Sam and Rowena have a private, very meaningful, moment together, while everyone is celebrating, after she manages to keep the rift open just long enough to get everyone home, acknowledging that she cares.

They actually have multiple touching, private moments together, which Rowena doesn't really have with other characters, besides a one off, here and there. Sam is the only one who gets that time with her repeatedly.

Sam is the one fated to kill Rowena. And she is very okay with this.

Rowena specifically requests Sam to help her, as she sees him as the closest thing they have to a seasoned witch.

At the end, Rowena, who supposedly cares about nothing, acknowledges to Sam that they have grown quite fond of each other, while crying.

Sam takes Rowena's death particularly hard.

Rowena's curse that kills anyone who comes in contact with her magical stash in her apartment, excludes Sam, and only Sam, from being harmed, as an indicator that she intended Sam to inherit her magical stash (though Dean is also unaffected when he goes in the apartment).

Rowena taught Sam magic off screen.

What do I love about them?:
While the power dynamics are a bit wonky, they are far closer to balancing out than any of the canon ships for either person. Sam pretty much accepts Rowena as she is. Rowena actually respects him. They get to a point where there is a certain level of trust between them, even thought it's complicated. They actually have chemistry. In the right settings, they could be amazing.

I'm not going to lie, they are a bit fucked up. I mean, at one point in the show, she tricked him into giving her his blood to the point he almost died, and at another point, to ensure she didn't double cross him, he attached her to a chain in the floor so she couldn't leave the room until she was done translating. They are not without problems, and some of what they do to each other is horrible, but it also weirdly balances out.

Where you can find it:
Currently, there are 468 public works on AO3 under the Rowena MacLeod/Sam Winchester tag.
