Just for the sake of clarity, this is a reaction to the episode that originally aired February 23rd. This was a really good episode. I had a ton of playback issues at the beginning and nearly just skipped it, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The rest is under the cut because of possible spoilers.
I still have mixed feelings about Mary and the British Men of Letters. It just feels like they haven't explained well enough why she is working with them. In this episode, it sort of felt like they were pushing the angle of she's more comfortable as a hunter than a mother, which makes sense. I guess we will wait and see if there is a bigger scene with it.
Crowley and Luci's back and forth was excellent. I love how they explained how he ended up in Crowley's hands instead of the cage and gave a decent enough explanation as to why he is back in Nick. To be fair, I would have thought any explanation that got Luci back into his “final vessel/home” would have made me happy.
It's great that we actually caught up with Kelly's arc and that they didn't just drop and pick it back up later at a random moment like an afterthought. Also, I am looking forward to more with Daigon.
Dean really must touch everything. It makes me smile and wonder why he doesn't get into more trouble with it.
I am very proud of myself for remembering the name of Gavin's ship and why it was important.
Finally, Gavin! I have been waiting for them to pick that storyline back up for a season and a half. I don't have particularly strong feeling for it besides happy that it has been resolved and I loved all the Crowley-Rowena-Gavin family interaction and subsequent drama.
This episode also fed the Sam/Rowena bunnies. It doesn't take much, the rabid little things.
So what about all the events that have changed because Gavin went back and died? Are we supposed to handwave that nothing apparently happened beyond those people are not longer dead and Sam, Dean, Crowley, and Rowena all remember what happened like the timeline of the world didn't change, again?
I love the way the ending of the episode was handled with the little montage. I also like that Mary telling the boys she was working with the British Men of Letters scene wasn't the last we saw of that. Them showing the little clip of them arguing made it feel a bit more real, because none of them would have just dropped it there.
