I have a long standing goal to do ALL the June Somethings. This month, this year, I have decided to finally go for it.

These were originally meant to do over 15 days in June to help boost activity on DW during the summer when it is traditionally very slow.

[personal profile] squidgiepdx's The June Something 2019 Edition

1. We all have that ONE fandom, or OTP. But what would you consider your backup fandom? Bonus: Who is your backup OTP? Same fandom or different?

If I were to divide my fandoms into main, back up, and other; I guess my back up fandoms would be Merlin, Fullmetal ALchemist, and InuYasha. It's little sad because at one time InuYasha was unquestionably my main fandom.

Backup OTP: I have so many pairings, in so many fandoms, I'm not sure how I would filter between "main" and "backup." Best I can do is if I am looking for something to read late at night and I can't find whatever it is that I was looking for to scratch whatever itch I had, my next search is usually Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Roy Harper/Jason Todd, or Ronon Dex/Rodney McKay. (Different fandoms)

2. If you were able to insert yourself into one fandom as your reality, what would it be? Bonus: How different would you be in that reality?

I'm not sure I'd survive any of my fandoms. (I just keep picturing a chibi version of myself in one of those claw machine claws, being carried around, looking for a place to drop me.)

In theory, I could be the most useful in Supernatural - I am excellent at research, I have survival skills, experience with guns, knife throwing, axe throwing, wood chippers, power tools, etc. Assuming I survive the first 5 minutes, I could probably find a niche.

However, Food Wars has more of an appeal. No dying. Ridiculous sexualization of food. I'd be fine.

3. What character do you think you would end up being best friends with? Bonus: What other character would you and your new bestie give a hard time to?

Friends might not be the right word, but I could be one of Rowena's worshipful underlings. Not a long life expectancy with that, but you know. Oh, we would be giving a hard time to literally everyone.

4. You get to crossover two completely different fandoms. What two shows, and why? Bonus: Give us a preview!

May I direct you to my AO3. It's probably the most common thing I write, crossovers. My favorites to do/have done are probably Avatar: The Last Aibender/Batman, Stargate Atlantis/Care Bears, InuYasha/Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a retail AU where I crossed over all of my fandoms,

5. You get to insert your favorite OTP into a new fandom. Who is the OTP, and what fandom? Bonus: Give us a preview!

See above. To be fair though, if I am just moving a pairing to do a fusion, I tend to plop them into horror movies. They don't always fair well. I've done it with most pairings I have at some point, but most recently it has been the unholy cluster fuck of Roy Harper/Dick Grayson/Jason Todd/Koriand'r (DC), John Sheppard/Rodney McKay (Stargate Atlantis), & Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson (Stargate SG-1).

6. What fandom that got a series finale was that most appropriate/most satisfying. Bonus: What about it would you have changed, if anything?

Um, do they ever? Logically, I do know it happens. I've even discussed good endings somewhere at some point. iZombie was wrapped nicely from what I remember. Leverage was also okay. Lately, it seems any time something was good/that had a good ending, got ruined by reboots and continuations. The bad part is, if they're good, I don't necessarily remember them...

7. What fandom that got a series finale was the LEAST appropriate/least satisfying. Bonus: How would you have fixed it?

...and if they are bad, I write fan fic. Frankly, if you want an unsatisfying ending, just throw a dart. The two that come to mind first are Supernatural and Stargate Atlantis, but they have both already been thoroughly ripped apart repeatedly elsewhere.

8. What is a fandom that you never thought you'd get into, but did? Bonus: How did you end up getting into it?

Honestly, Supernatural. I had a friend that was super into it from the beginning that would give me constant updates from day one until the season 5 finale, to the point where I felt like I was watching the show myself and could not summon any interest in it. However, her descriptions and recaps later turned out to be... not the best. Vexed got into the show during season 6 and spent that entire season dragging me into the show and fandom kicking and screaming. By the time season 7 was through, I was caught up enough to be watching the show as it aired and was firmly entrenched in the fandom.

9. What is the smallest fandom that you're in?

At one time, I would have said Blue Exorcist, but things fluxuate so much anymore, I'm not really sure. (I mean aside from essentially dead fandoms like Northern Exposure, but that finally got a home for streaming, so that may change.)

10. What is the largest fandom that you're in?

Unquestionably, Batman/DC comics

11. What is the fandom that you're in, but none of your fen are?

Our Flag Means Death. I try not to be obnoxious about it.

12. What fandom did everyone else get into, but you never did?

Game of Thrones. I have nothing against it, I just never summoned enough interest in it to even try it, the show or books, which is weird because you would think it would be right up my alley.

13. What do YOU consider fandom's "little black dress"? Is it a coffeeshop AU? Sharing a bed trope? Bonus, share your favorite example.

After rolling some dice to pick a fandom, Batman's little black dress is case fics. AU or canon, any pairing, that is the most common type of fic, even if it's not the main trope or even a listed trope of a fic, it works its way in. This is in no way surprising, but it is a thing.

14. Some long fics used to come with a playlist. What's a song that you were introduced to by something fannish, and what was it inspired by? Bonus: Share a link to the song/music.

I miss fics having playlists. I also miss the playlist from a certain fanfic that has been taken down and I don't want to mention the title of that I hopefully still have a PDF of somewhere.

I used to have my own long playlist of these kinds of songs, but that's gone now. Off the top of my head though:

"Every Time We Touch" by Cascada was ubiquitous in fandom for a long stretch. There was not a fandom or a pairing it seemed that did not have a fan video made with this song.

"When You Were Young" by The Killers. There was a heartbreakingly beautiful Samurai Champloo fan video made to this song that I used to watch over and over again. It's burned into my soul. Sometimes, I still try to find it again, but I'm fairly certain it disappeared off the internet.

Almost every Taylor Swift song I know is because of the Supernatural fandom.

The Supernatural fandom is also responsible for nearly all of my knowledge of Ke$ha songs, with the glaring exception of "Your Love is my Drug." That would be the fault of Avatar: the Last Airbender and Zuko/Sokka/Jet.

"Don't Trust Me" by 3OH!3 - I see you Naruto fandom and your unhinged behavior that helped form my early internet fandom years.

15. What is something you do today that you wouldn't be doing if not for fandom? Examples: Vacation with fellow fen, running a community, etc.

Simply even be on DW for one. I wouldn't have most of my friends and all the things we've done together over the years. I probably would have stopped writing. Book club would be far less fun. Frankly, to be probably, a little too honest, if it wasn't for fandom, I would probably be dead by now.

Part 1 can be found here.

Once again, this is more accurately, Batman adjacent things. Most of this might actually be Jason Todd. These are all little things that were originally going to be there own posts, but I have collected them together into one big post, which turned into two posts, so, that they would actually get posted. Enjoy!

~ I am not entirely sure why, but I've been wanting more Stephanie & Jason content (not Stephanie/Jason), fan or canon. It just seems like they should hang out more? I think it's because we got that little tease of them being friends in canon last year maybe. I don't know. It's just hard to find.

~ It's not happen so much right now, but earlier in the year, Batman/Pokemon Fusions were everywhere all of a sudden. It's not like Pokemon fusion works are unusual in any fandom, but there were so many and it brought up so many questions for me. Most of it was fan art featuring the Robins as Pokemon trainers with their Pokemon. There was a memorable piece that had Batman as the Pokemon trainer and the Robins as his Pokemon; little Pokemon hybrids, wearing versions of their costumes, which is kind of interesting to think about how that would work in a fusion universe. Which brought to mind a Supernatural Pokemon fusion, that included were-pokemon; wild Pokemon by day, people by night. I wonder what kind of Pokemon the Batman characters would be, if they were were-pokemon? And back to if they were Pokemon trainers, would Damian be liberating them or hoarding them? Would there be an intervention? There was more to this train of thought, but it has flown out of my brain.

~ It's kind of old news now, but Lego came out with a set that is the Gotham City skyline from Batman: The Animated Series to celebrate Batman's 85th anniversary. Is it cool? Yes. Do I want one? Of course. Am I getting one? No. It's $300 and absolutely enormous once assembled. There is also a Lego Batman Mech suit coming out this summer. That is at least in my price range ($15, I think) and I might have a place to put it, maybe.

~ I have been poking at my Batman/Avatar Urban Fantasy crossover series. I have two rough drafts I like and want to work on, but I keep talking myself out of posting them (I have no idea why). One is kind of a Girl with Dogs parody. (Girl with the Dogs is a delightful pet grooming YouTube channel.) Basically, Jason is spending more time in his transformed form (he is a werewolf in this, among other issues), and he ended up going to the groomers to deal with his shedding problem. It's meant to be light-hearted and funny. The other is more of a day in the life thing. It's established in canon of my fic's universe that Damian has started spending more time with Jason, slightly pre-series, but Jason is unclear if Damian sees him as a sibling or one of his many pets. This fic plays off of that. Also, mostly humor.

While we are on the topic of this series, there were some unposted parts of it I had additional backups of and I cannot find them, which is frustrating me. They're the one where Bruce and Clark stop Damian and Jon from playing alien autopsy in Bruce's lab, the one where Dick narrowly stops Damian and Jason from sacrificing Tim to a demon, and the scene where Zuko goes to dig up Jason for his necromancy assignment to find that Jason isn't dead anymore already.

~ While we are speaking of fics, I thought I had narrowed down the content for the main characters, Bruce, Clark, and Diana, for my YouTuber AU, but now I am not so sure. Clark will do "wholesome" reaction content. Diana's is the hardest for me to explain, but clearest in my head. She's been on YouTube for a long time and like a lot of older channels that are still active, its a mixture of older style content and newer trends, but the main focus is travel vlogs, museum vlogs, and random video essays. Bruce is that content creator that has far too many channels that make you wonder if they ever sleep. The difference being that his channels are not known to be by the same creator. His main ones are a "Brucie Wayne" charity livestreaming channel and under a different persona he has a ASMR & horror stories channel (is there a furry vtuber or sprite attached to it, I dunno). He also has a collaboration channel with Clark, that often features Diana. He doesn't have a true crime podcast because I think he would struggle with the ethics of a true crime podcast, he is obsessed with them though. The real question is does he also have an everyday carry channel? Like, are we going that far down the rabbit hole? Anyway, all this could change. That's just where I'm at now.

~ My brain cannot let this question go: If faced with needing to wear booty shorts for a mission, would Jason totally lean into it, complain loudly and relentlessly about having to wear Dick's "green scaly panties" the whole time he was Robin so why are you making him relive that, or both?

~ The Niblet and I were discussing this: If Batman were some sort of creature with animal ears (think a cat boy or a my little pony or something), but also still Batman with the cowl, would the cowl have both the bat ears and space for his animal ears poking up, smoosh down his animal ears so it looks like they are not there and have the bat ears, or incorporate space for his animal ears into the cowl's bat ears? While there is a ton of cat boy (and similar) Batman fan art out there, some of which include the batsuit, I have yet to see one with the cowl on. Red Hood fan art of that nature tends to include ears in the helmet, but most versions of Jason's helmet do not canonically already have little ears so, it's not a great comparison. What brought this on was some Two Face My Little Pony art. Another fun observation though, there is a ton of Neko/cat boy Batman fan art out there (and yes, they are almost always big, burly Batman), but I have never seen any where he is also paired with Catwoman. This just feels like a missed opportunity.

That's all the silly Batman things for now. Thank you for indulging me.

Challenge #11

In your own space, create a fanwork.

I'm not sure if this is the final version of this and I've already shared a version of it at [community profile] ushobwri, where I was given the suggestion of refering to the genre of the series as urban fantasy.

This is a short scene between Zuko and Jason in my Batman/Avatar the last Airbender crossover, urban fantasy AU. All you need to know for this is that Jason is a werewolf, Zuko is a magic user, and they are dating.

Warning for non-graphic conversation about hypothetical cannibalism.

Challenge #8

Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying)

I have a lot of fannish projects in varying stages of progress. These are the ones that are most present on my mind of late:

- I am actively working on adding to my crossover series'. I feel like I don’t give them enough love, despite being some of my favorite things to poke at. The most current ones are:

An Avatar: The Last Airbender/Batman crossover modern magic AU. Basically, magic and supernatural creatures are real, and it’s not really a secret, but it’s kind of ignored or looked down upon by larger “regular” human society. It’s there if you are looking for it, but most people aren’t. Bruce Wayne is a doctor at a free clinic by day and mad scientist by night, Alfred is something unspeakable and old, there is something really wrong with Dick but nobody talks about it, Tim has been recently turned into a vampire and hiding it, and Jason Todd is a werewolf that was adopted by Bruce and then resurrected Frankenstein style after he died. Most of the rest of the cast, including nearly all the AtLA characters, are magic users of various types, except Sokka. I have no idea what to do with Sokka. Most of the characters know each other by either being adopted by being part of the Wayne family or by going to the same exclusive school.

And

An Addams Family/Batman crossover kid fic AU, where Bruce Wayne and Wednesday Addams are the same age and neighbors (and have a crush on each other).

- I’ve been designing ornaments for a fandom themed holiday tree to reflect my multifandom-ness. Examples include: a small stocking that, in material and design, is inspired by the Stargate Atlantis off world uniforms with a ZPM in it and a garland that looks like Inuyasha’s beads of subjugation necklace. Though everything is in the planning stages.

Related to this, I’ve also been working on a strictly Good Omens themed mini tree. I have the white mini tree and I made a red snake garland for it, but it has some issues. The rest of the decorations were going to be made from shrink plastic, but I haven’t had time and resources to make them.

- Last year I started a junk journal of my year, that included tags of my fandoms of the year. Almost all of them are still in progress. Basically, they were paper tags styled after old school manilla tags and I drew related fanart on them. So far, there are ones for Wednesday, The Sandman, Hilde, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Invader Zim, and Moonstruck, but there are more to come.

- I have lengthy WIP that is a master list of all the Bat gadgets mentioned in the original 1960 Batman TV series, as well as another list of all of Dick Grayson’s hobbies and extracurricular activities. I am thinking of starting another one of all the committees Bruce is on.

- Speaking of lists, I also have one of all of the “periodic exclamations of surprise that also name-check women in history and the arts” in the Lumberjanes series in progress. (I had to quote someone on Good Reads to get the description right.)

There are more, but those are the big ones, I think.

Challenge #5

Search in your current space, whether brick-and-mortar or digital. Post a picture (a link to a picture will be fine!) or description of something that is or represents
:

1. Something your favorite character would like
One of the problems with being so multifandom is that, I am not sure who my favorite character is, like, no one particular character comes to mind. According to [personal profile] vexed_wench, my favorite character is Alfred Pennyworth. I think he would appreciate my very clearly labeled storage system and that I have sewing kits hidden throughout the house. My mother heard what I was doing and started shouting out Dean Winchester related things, so I will add the assorted bottles of whiskey in the laundry room. (We keep all the alcohol in a cabinet in the laundry room. Also, Bobby is actually my favorite Supernatural character, but I think this works for both.) And just because I feel like Iroh needs a shout out, I think he would appreciate my very assorted collection of teas.

2. Something that makes you laugh
The gifs from Vexed that regularly grace my phone.

3. A fandom place you would like to visit
Okay, technically, there are a few things I could use for this, but every time I found one, my brain went, "No, not there, you'll die." So, I'm skipping this one. (Though my mother has decided to help me with this scavenger hunt and brought me my Stargate SG-1 DVDs when she heard what question I was on.)

4. A fandom creator (pro or not) you'd like to meet
My brain interpreted this in too many ways. If we are talking a creator that created a fandom, I am going with my Emotional Support Demon plushie. I was so happy to get one of The Click’s plushies after missing out on Cliccy Kitties 1 and 2, and both runs of Mango. (I also got the keychain sized versions of the Emotional Support Demon and Mango last year.) If we are talking a creator in a fandom that creates fandom things, I have the print out of an email, for collage purposes, of confirmation of tickets I bought for a virtual burlesque show I went to a few years ago. One of the show’s featured performers was a writer/cosplayer/performer/make-up artist/trans & chronic illness advocate/comic enthusiast/goblin rogue I really appreciate. But honestly the idea of meeting anyone is terrifying.

5. Something you find comforting
Oden the Peccary Pig of the Squishmallow Desert Squad. According to his bio, he loves building intricate sandcastles. All I know is petting the fluff on top of his head helps me sleep.

6. Something from a favorite TV series or movie from your childhood
When I was a baby, my sister made me a Popple blanket from a kit as part of her sewing class.

7. A piece of clothing you love
My red "DAMNIT BRUCE, WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF ROOMS" T-shirt. It was an early bit of Panda Redd merch that, sadly, most of the lettering has come off of. I went to buy a sticker with the saying, but when he switched shops recently, it was not part of the old designs he brought over.

8. A book or song with a color in the title
There are literally thousands of books in my house and I frustratingly could not find one with a color in the title. So, I turned to my music collection and found "Inked in Red" by Vision video and "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance at pretty much the same time.

9. Something only someone in your fandom would understand
I guess my letterman's jacket. It’s maroon with grey sleeves and a grey hood. The emblem on the left side of the chest is a “15” in the center of the “flame” design that surrounds an anti-possession tattoo and the back has a W with a black Chevy impala threaded through it with, “There’ll be peace when you are done” around it. I’ve worn this thing almost every day for almost (?) 4 years now. The most common comment I get is people shouting “cool jacket” at me. I also get a lot of knowing nods from people I assume are Supernatural fans and it’s started a lot of unexpected conversations about Supernatural. However, it has just as often gotten people coming up to me asking what sport I played, wanting to try to start conversations about cars, asking what religious organization I belong to, or just “what does 15 mean?”

spiralicious: Kuroshitsuji Characters in School Garb (Kuro Geek)
As I am listening to the Audible adaptation of The Sandman vol. 1 (which I will write a reaction to when I'm done), I am reminded that in the name of time management, I am going to try to limit myself to one large fandom project at a time (aside from the Batman meta I've been working on for a little over a year). But since I would posting about it here, I would like your input on what I should do first. Here are the options:

Stargate franchise rewatch. I originally started this for the 25th anniversary of the movie, but life happened. I would be starting over, but it would be the same schedule.

Supernatural series rewatch. It's officially been a year since the show ended, so it would be a good time to do a serious rewatch starting with season 1.

Vampire Chronicles reread. I have technically never read all of the Vampire Chronicles and a few years ago, I did attempt to read/reread the entire series from the beginning, but got caught up some real life issues in the middle of rereading The Vampire Lestat. This wasn't totally surprising as while The Interview with the Vampire was an important part of my pre-teen life, the books seem to get worse as they went along. With Anne Rice's passing, I have renewed interest in attempting this. There is a Vampire Chronicles book club comm on DW I could get a schedule from.

Anime night. I miss having a weekly anime night and this would be me reacting to and/or reviewing an anime ideally every other week or more realistically, monthly.

Horror night. The same as anime night, but it would be a horror movie or series.

With either anime night or horror night, after I have been doing it long enough to get a schedule down, I could add in a secondary project.

I could also easily do something with an Avatar: the Last Airbender and/or Legend of Korra rewatch or reactions to the franchises various books and comics – if I could find a reading order.
