I know how this guy feels

Since I've been home I've been reading, a lot. Not books, but I've been reading. Anyway, one of the things I have been reading is Surfer magazine. I used to read it a lot but now I'm letting all the subscriptions of my magazine slide, so I've been catching up on all the back issues I missed. This letter of the month from the Feb 2007 issue of Surfer really spoke to me in its own wierd little way, so I thought I would share it with you. It's a bit funny too.
The Going-Green Blues:
"Sin is living within me, as similarly described in the Bible by Paul’s book of Romans: as I struggle to do what I believe is right, I’m also constantly committing acts that are wrong. You see, Father, I’m a surfer who is concerned for our environment. However, I also love trips to Baja. I used to make tactical strikes there in my gas-guzzling, carbon monoxide-spewing ’95 Cherokee, which reliably got me to my favorite spots off the beaten path. But I sold the Cherokee and purchased a used diesel powered 4 x4 Ram and quickly had it converted to run on biodiesel – like the Malloy brother- only to find out that while low in carbon monoxide emissions, the truck now has higher levels of nitrogen oxide emissions, which affect ground-level ozone and can cause respiratory problems and contribute to global warming.
So, I bought an electric-powered vehicle to supplement my local trips, which is emission-free, only to find out that one of the power plants which supplies my electricity dams a river that was once the natural habitat for wild salmon. So I sold the car and bought a sailboat, but the harbor where I dock my boat has a breakwater that blocks natural sand migration, albeit with great resulting waves. These are just my transportation issues. We haven’t even gotten into the manufacturing of my boards, wet suits, home, television, DVD player, iPod, and laptop. Or the other items that contribute to my ever-expanding environmental footprint.
So you see, Father, in my mind I want to do what is right for the environment, but my flesh has the mind set of Ritchie Collins.
For you kids out there, Ritchie was a pro surfer in the ‘80s who didn’t believe we needed to be environmentally conscious because the planet was biblically doomed. So, I continue to inadvertently live as a parasite, sucking the life out of my own ecosystem. Father, please forgive these sins and offer me words of hope."
