In an effort to find things to get me out of the house (for fun, not the I have to things), I have been checking out the new programming at the library.

They are starting a book club. First meeting is in September. The cool thing about it is that its a genre book club. As in August has a genre theme and in September we meet to talk about some book we read from that genre and drink coffee for an hour.

I want to give it a shot, but I am having trouble picking a book.

The theme for August is Fantasy and I was just going to browse the stacks until something jumped out at me, but like a lot of librarys, they have lumped the sci-fi and the fantasy into the same section. I would do the same thing. But as much as I like fantasy, I am more apt to grab something that is more sci-fi instead. As this is a genre specific book club, I would like my fantasy pick to be firmly in the fantasy genre in case they do sci-fi later.

I also would like to read something that is a stand alone, not the beginning of an epic trilogy or lengthy series I will feel compelled to keep reading. That would be awesome for some other time, not book club.

It would also be nice to read something I haven't read before, though I am flexible on that.

This is a very tall order.

Anyone have any ideas?

I started reading the Dunk & Egg tales by George RR Martin. (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) It's 3 novellas in one book.

You could read The Silmarillion by JRR Tolkien, but he can be a bit dry & scholarly.

There's A Wizard of Earthsea, by Ursula LeGuin. Read it as a kid so can't really tell you much about it. XD (I think it could be a series.)

There's also Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & through the looking-glass.

What about The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle?

Or The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley?

Most of these I've read when I was younger, so I can't really tell you what they're about, but you should be able to google them all as well as find them in your library.

Pretty much anything with swords, sorcery, dragons, elves, or other magical creatures it's fantasy. The thing is, a lot of fantasy tends to be two or more books. XD

Or Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones?

All good suggestions, Kira. I have read all of them, except the George RR Martin, and the library doesn't have that one. I had been considering rereading The Mists of Avalon or The Last Unicorn if nothing else popped as I think I also own both of those.

Yes, A Wizard of Earthsea is the beginning of the Earthsea series.

Yes, I also know what qualifies as a Fantasy book. I read quite a lot of it. That wasn't the problem. It's just really hard to pick a book and I don't want to get bogged down into a series if I can avoid it right now, as I said in the post. It is quite the issue in the Fantasy genre.

Thanks! A pity, as it's pretty good so far. :D I don't know what happened to my6 copy of the last Unicorn, but the Mists of Avalon is right behind me. XD

I thought so. I know I read the first book as a kid, don't know if I read anything else in the series. XD

Sorry, I must have misunderstood what you meant & got carried away. XD Yeah, it was hard trying to find books that are stand-alones in that genre. XD I'm glad you have somewhat of a list to work from. :D

You're welcome. XD

I had to look it up and double check to be honest.

It is a series heavy genre for sure.
