December 03 → talk about movies this year
I am going to warn you now, I watch a lot of movies. They are how I celebrate special occasions and I tend to have the TV going all the time for the background noise. It helps me focus.
I think the only movie I saw at the theater this year was Godzilla: King of the Monsters. It's not the best Godzilla movie, but I was pretty happy with it.
During Shark Week, I discovered that there are a ton of shark themed horror movies on Amazon Prime.
At the monthly dinners at my sister's, we always watch a movie. The most notable of which was Aquaman. I was surprised at how good it was, especially with all the CGI. Yes, it is incredibly cheesy, but it's well balanced cheese.
Early in the year, I tried watching my way through David Hewlett's imbd list, but a lot of it is not streaming anywhere, or it wasn't at the time.
This summer, I watched a lot of really random movies to try to find inspiration for the Stargate Atlantis' Cinema Challenge. The top two contenders where Her and The Lodgers. The latter of which is an Irish Gothic horror movie about a set of twins that can't leave their family estate because of a family curse. It was a beautifully shot, slow build film. It was amazing and then the ending was too rushed, which almost completely ruins it.
I ended up using the Care Bear movie for the cinema challenge.
I did my usual 31 days of Halloween movies during October. This was helped by the library doing a daytime horror series. They showed Psycho, Alien, The Thing, The Blair Witch Project, and The Wind over the course of the month. The Wind is fairly new and I hadn't seen it before. It's unusual in that it's a horror western. It's also an unsettling psychological thriller that will leave you unsure of everything you just saw. I recommend it to everyone.
The other October standout was Free Form has a special version of The Nightmare Before Christmas with little pop up bubbles throughout the movie with snarky commentary. It was amazing.
The library also was doing Saturday movie nights. All the movies were family friendly. Mom and I were really enjoying them until they moved them to Saturday afternoon matinees.
I finally watched ThanksKilling over thanksgiving, something I have wanted to do for years. It's a horrible movie, but its one of those low budget b movies that knows its horrible and totally embraces it until its awesome. It's about a supernatural talking turkey on a killing spree. You must be able to enjoy South Park and ugly puppets to enjoy this movie.
A friend and I managed to do a little hate watching over the phone. There is something about watching a horrible movie and being able to talk to someone about it while it is happening that is lots of fun. We watched Sumuru. The sad part is, if it could have just decided what it wanted to be, it could have been a genuinely good movie. It was like watching softcore cable porn, but without the porn and it took itself seriously, but still left in all the dialogue cues and kept the wardrobe.
I also just watched Thor: Ragnarok. I'd been waiting to watch it on the big TV screen. It was hilarious and amazing.
December 04 → talk about television this year
Fair warning again, I watch even more TV than I do movies, for pretty much the same reasons; background noise.
Most of my housesitting TV watching revolved around waiting for Netflix series I've been following updating. The one I anticipated the most was the latest season of The Crown.
I started watching the new series The Politician. I'm not sure how much I like it as a show, but I am loving the aesthetic of it.
I watched a documentary series on the wild life of Norway. At one point, it was following a bull moose that went about mating in unusual ways and I was making Jared the were-moose jokes for weeks afterwards.
I also discovered a cartoon series I hadn't seen before called We Bare Bears. Its about a grizzly bear, polar bear, and panda bear living together as brothers and I have no idea why I love it so much.
At home, we have an antenna for TV. Its not super reliable and gets between 1 and 5 channels at anyone time. I don't like 95% of what's on, but Mom and I have been getting back into Sunday night Animation Domination, at least The Simpsons, Bless the Harts, & Bob's Burgers.
This year was the 20th anniversary of Stargate (which should have been in the movie section), so I've been doing a rewatch of the whole Stargate franchise. I got stalled near the end of season 5 of Stargate SG-1.
This year is also the 40th anniversary of Rich Koz playing Svengoolie, which is generally must see TV for me Saturday nights.
The Good Omens mini series premiered. OMG there was no way I was going to miss that and it did not disappoint. I love the book so much and it's such a great adaptation.
I was watching Warehouse 13. I really liked it, but I got distracted by other things.
Normally, I watch a ton of anime, but I think the only series I've been watching this year is Aggretsuko. It's a slice of life series about a Red Panda learning how to adult. I really recommend it. It's depictions of adult relationships are very on point. And despite being an adult series, the character designs are ridiculously cute.
Lately, I have been rekindling my love of Frasier.
I also discovered that my sister's TV gets the channel that marathons the original Law & Order series on Sundays – the day I just so happen to watch her dogs. Lucky me!
I tried watching Prodigal Son, but Fox' free streaming thing for their current shows doesn't play nice with my laptop.
Of course, I have to talk about Supernatural. I have a lot of mixed feelings this season. With it being the last, it makes me really sad, but I have been mostly enjoying the season. It does feel a bit like they sat down and went “Okay, what crazy things have we not done yet?” and tried to cram them all in. But it works.
December 05 → talk about books this year
Between the Good Reads challenge and book club, I've read and started to read a lot of books this year. At Good Reads, I pledged to read 20 books this year. So far, I've read 10. Right now, I'm reading Tokyo Ghoul vol. 3, The Christmas Cake Murder, and The Adventurous Eaters Club. I'll probably finish those and a book for the “winter” theme for book club, but I doubt I'll hit 20 books by the end of the year.
The books I have read this year so far are We Set the Dark on Fire, Bog Child, One Piece vol. 1, Silence, Good Omens, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Tokyo Ghoul vol. 1, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The Witch who Came in from the Cold, and Tokyo Ghoul vol. 2. I recommend any of them, for different reasons. Okay, maybe not Silence. It's the author musing about his life and the role of silence in it with some references thrown in for a couple hundred pages.
Oh and I started a collection of stories by Arthur Machen. It focus' on stories he originally published in the 1890s. He's more readable than Lovecraft, but I don't know if the stories are as good.
