JANUARY
1 Jan: Polar Bear Plunge Day: What’s the coldest you’ve ever been? What’s the coldest place you’ve ever been?
Cold enough to watch my extremities turn purple.
2 Jan: World Introvert Day: How introverted are you? Does it change based on your surroundings?
I am very much an introvert. I force myself into social situations for my own good, but short things can take days to recover from. I guess it can be surroundings based, with very close friends in more intimate settings, I can be much less introverted (and online as well), but frankly, alcohol content has more of an effect.
3 Jan: JRR Tolkien Day: What’s your favorite Tolkien character?
Pippin! I don't actually know why, I just went with my gut and he was the first character to come to mind.
4 Jan: World Braille Day: Have you ever studied Braille? If you don’t require Braille, have you ever run your fingers over a sign instructions or a book page in Braille?
As I child, I was obsessed with touching any braille I saw.
5 Jan: Whipped Cream Day: If you eat whipped cream, what’s your favorite way to eat it?
I have had other homemade whipped cream and I make homemade whipped cream on occasion, but Bushy made it for me once and nothing else can compare. In polite spaces, my favorite way to eat whipped cream is on hot chocolate where I try to savor it slowly. Otherwise, sprayed directly into my mouth, please.
6 Jan: Sherlock Holmes’ Birthday: If you have one, what’s your favorite adaptation of Sherlock Holmes?
I am currently house-sitting at Charlie & Mimi's playhouse and no not have access to my DVD collection, but I have some individual episodes on DVD of an older Sherlock Holmes series and it would be my favorite, I just can't tell you exactly which one that is at the moment.
7 Jan: Tempura Day: Do you like tempura?
I love tempura, especially tempura sweet potatoes.
8 Jan: Winter Skin Relief Day: What’s your favorite lotion, cream, moisturizer, skin treatment?
I don't have a favorite, but my skin is sensitive and can be extremely dry, so I am constantly trying to find the magic thing that works. I am currently working through my lotion stash and stash of one time use skin treatments. My favorites of the moment are Gold Bond for multi-use/any issue lotion that I always have on hand, epielle k-beauty hydrating hyaluronic acid cream for my face which was one of the two full sized products in a 12 day beauty products advent calendar thing I got for the holidays, and my lavender & bergamont post shave balm that I don't have with me so, I can't tell you the brand name of.
9 Jan: Shop for Travel Day: What (if anything) do you usually buy before a trip (travel-size toiletries, magazines, snacks)?
I treat preparing for travel like a tactical mission. My travel often means hours spent in the middle of nowhere so, prep work can be key. I don't usually need to buy much though, it's more about careful packing. However, I always need snacks.
10 Jan: Houseplant Appreciation Day: What kind of houseplants do you have in your home?
I do not currently have any house plants, which saddens me. My succulents and fern live outside. The inside plants all died, though I was reassured by someone more knowledgeable than I am that the problem is more the source of my plants and less me. Unfortunately, I don't have a better plant source at the moment. I would love to expand my succulent garden, get another brain cactus, start a moss terrarium, and get some moss ball pets (which are actually algae, not plants) if I had my druthers.
11 Jan: World Sketchnote Day: Do you doodle?
Yes, all the time, on nearly everything, myself included.
12 Jan: Hot Tea Day: Do you drink hot tea? If so, what kinds?
Yes, I drink lots of hot tea. I've been told I'm very adventurous. Oolong is my preferred tea to drink at home. I am a sucker for a good green tea though. I also drink a lot of peppermint tea and ginger tea.
13 Jan: Sticker Days: If you use stickers, how? Do you have favorite stickers?
I like to sticker bomb things. It can be hard to get together enough stickers, if you are going for a particular theme or color scheme. For example, the cover of my bullet journal is Halloween themed and while it's well covered, it has some glaring gaps. I used to use them to decorate mail when I sent more letters. (I do miss that.) Mostly, I just collect them at this point. I should get a storage book. My favorite sticker currently is a Dutch Bros Halloween sticker from a couple years back that is a trick or treating unicorn in a skeleton onesie. I worked hard for that sticker.
14 Jan: International Kite Day: Do you know how to fly a kite?
In theory, yes. I haven't done so since I was quite small and I do not own a kite. Which, there is no good reason why I don't fly a kite. We have wind. We have an annual kite festival that's been going on for nearly 30 years. We have a kite shop.
15 Jan: Bagel Day: Do you like bagels? What kind? What kind of toppings do you put on them? Toasted or not toasted?
I get the occasional hankering for a bagel. I seemed to have liked them better when we had a sandwich shop that only did bagel sandwiches. I don't remember any of the sandwiches we used to get but I remember all the bagels being so much better than anything you can get in the store.
My favorite toppings would be either a warm (not toasted) plain bagel with strawberry cream cheese or any savory flavored bagel with cream cheese, smoked salmon, and a little bit of cheap caviar.
16 Jan: Quinoa Day: Have you tried quinoa? Do you like it?
I have had quinoa. It's alright.
17 Jan: International Mentoring Day: Do you have a mentor? Have you mentored someone else?
Many people have decided they were going to be my mentor whether I wanted them to be or not (this never goes well) and I have had one person decide I was going to be her mentor, whether I wanted to or not. I would like to think that went alright while it lasted.
18 Jan: Winnie the Pooh Day: Do you have a favorite Winnie the Pooh character? Or story?
When I was a kid, I was quite fond of Piglet, and Tigger... and Roo, and Eeyore. I'm not sure who my favorite would be now. Everyone associating my dad with Eeyore has kind of dampened my enthusiasm there, though.
19 Jan: Popcorn Day: If you like popcorn, what kind? Butter? Other toppings or flavors?
So many flavors. At the movie theater, I just want the fake butter. At home, I usually go for unbuttered & unsalted, but with cheese. Bagged grocery store popcorn, I will try in any flavor, but there used to be this mushroom and herb one that was amazing and has since been discontinued. And for as much as I hate caramel, I love the kettle corn from the fair. But the best popcorn is free popcorn at the hardware store. It has the added flavor of victory that comes from showing up early enough that popcorn is still there and it hasn't gone stale yet.
20 Jan: Cheese Lovers Day: Do you love cheese? What kind(s)?
I am feeling too lazy to link to whatever day I talked about my unholy love of cheese during the Snowflake, but yes, I love cheese. Almost all kinds of cheese. I have a handmade binder of cheese information. I started an argument about a cheese plate cookbook. In general, my favorite cheese is smoked Gouda, though I have others that are situation dependent.
21 Jan: International Sweatpants Day: How much time do you spend in sweatpants?
I live in them these days and yes, that is mostly by choice.
22 Jan: Answer your Cat’s Questions: If you have a cat, what kind of question(s) might they ask? What would be your answer(s)?
23 Jan: Handwriting Day: How is your handwriting?
I will always think it is dreadful, even though everyone tells me it's nice. I think that's because they are usually seeing it in a card when I have been being extra careful. I spent years with practice books, only to have almost no improvement, and I still write things out by hand more than I type, so I can't even use that as an excuse. It's quite frustrating.
24 Jan: Peanut Butter Day: Do you like peanut butter?
I eat it straight out of the jar.
25 Jan: Robert Burns Day: Have your best laid plans ever gone awry? Has your love ever been like a red, red rose?
I was going to obnoxiously respond with more Robert Burns lines, but my brain is mush. But yes, my best laid plans go awry nearly daily and my love has never been like a red, red rose, a mold laden, rotting succulent at times, but never a red, red rose.
26 Jan: Clashing Clothes Day: Have you ever accidentally or deliberately mismatched your clothes?
Yes, I mean I dress more for comfort than fashion, but sometimes also, the mismatch just works.
27 Jan: National Geographic Day: Have you ever taken an amazing photograph?
I did once. At a high school graduation party, I managed to get this amazing picture of one of my friends doing a back flip on a trampoline with a cheap disposable (film) camera. I've never had such luck since.
28 Jan: Data Privacy Day: How much do you do to protect your data or identity?
Both too much and not nearly enough.
29 Jan: Puzzle Day: Do you like puzzles? What kind?
I do prefer logic puzzles to jigsaw puzzles, not because I dislike jigsaw puzzles, but because in my family they are one of those things that usually leads to physical altercations and prefer to avoid that. I do my daily Murdle puzzle and my daily Dungleon puzzle. I love crossword puzzles, but I have to kind of do them in secret or certain people will horn in and take over.
Funnily enough, last year my mother and I both took this test of like 38 logic puzzles and the ones I found ridiculously easy, she couldn't figure out and the one she found ridiculously easy, I found frustrating and couldn't solve. If that doesn't just sum up our relationship, I'm not sure what does.
30 Jan: Croissant Day: What is the best way to eat a croissant? Plain or with jam or butter or something else?
That all depends on where is the croissant from? How old is it? Is it a sweet or a savory? But generally speaking, plain, stuffed with strawberries and whipped cream, or heated with ham and cheese, depending.
31 Jan: Inspire your Heart with Art Day: What kind of art inspires your heart?
Anything that you can tell the artist really put themselves into it.
