[personal profile] squidgiepdx's The June Something 2020

I actually completed this one back in 2020, which surprised the hell out of me. I will be linking back to my 2020 answers, but I will also put in updated answers as well.

1. What's a new fandom that you've fallen into since the last June Something/in the last year?

In the last year, I have mostly be revisiting old fandoms, but I also got very into Our Flag Means Death.

2020 answer to days 1-3

2. You're stuck in quarantine with two people from different fandoms. Who are they, and who "breaks" first?

In 2020, I picked characters via dice roll. This time around, I had Vexed pick for me. Elliot Spencer (Leverage) & Dean Winchester (Supernatural). I am breaking first because those two will start bickering and it is going to drive me over the edge. We should eat fairly well though and probably be able to find things to watch we can all agree on. We also all keep weird hours, so that should work out. They should also keep each other entertained, which sounds like it would work in my favor, but I keep seeing loud bickering matches my ear plugs will do nothing for, holes in the walls, and pranks gone wrong.

2020 answer to days 1-3

3. Who is the first character that you fell in love with?

I was going to give this a lot of reflection and give what I assumed was going to be a more meaningful, heartfelt answer, but looking at my 2020 answer, I'm keeping it. It's honest.

2020 answer to days 1-3

4. If you were introducing your favorite fandom to someone new, what one episode would you make them sit down and watch?

I whole heartedly stick by my 2020 answer.

2020 answer

5. You get to fuck/marry/kill in one fandom. What's the fandom, and who in the fandom fits each item?

Because I am so multi fandom, I had Vexed pick my top 5 fandoms to do and because I am curious how it compares, I am doing this before I read my 2020 answer.

Batman
Fuck: Okay, this is hard. Everyone I come up with then has the immediate thought of "and then I will die." Selina Kyle/Catwoman
Marry: Alfred, I am not explaining
Kill: Riddler from the Tom King Batman comics run, you know what you did.

Stargate (She just said Stargate, so I'm guessing the whole franchise is open)
Fuck: Okay, this is harder than Batman was for different reasons. Vala Mal Doran
Marry: Jack O'Neill
Kill: Elizabeth Weir

Merlin
Fuck: Gwaine
Marry: Morgana
Kill: Uther

Supernatural
Fuck: Rowena
Marry: Bobby
Kill: Chuck

"Any anime you can age up" Um, I'm going to pretend she just said any anime.
Fuck: Jin (Samurai Champloo)
Marry: Tatsu (The Way of the Househusband)
Kill: Kagome (InuYasha)

2020 answers days 5- 11

6. What is something that has surprised you about a fandom? Like, you expected the main fandom pairing to be X/Y, but the main pairing in fandom is actually X/Z. Or a pairing you expected to be slashed together isn't very popular?

If I had more braincells currently, I'm sure I could come up with a more updated answer, but I also very much stick by my 2020 answer.

2020 answers days 5- 11

7. What is your favorite celebrity interaction from any fandom you've had?

I have still not had a celebrity interaction and my answer from 2020 still stands.

2020 answers days 5- 11

8. What is a kink that fandom introduced you to, and you said, "Yes, Please!"

My answer hasn't really changed.

2020 answers days 5- 11

9. Is there any fandom that you regret getting into?

I can't say there is a particular fandom I regret getting into. Fav characters, sometimes. Pairing, yes. Some fandom spaces, yes. A few former fandom friends, most definitely. On some days, fandom as a whole, despite how it sustains me. There are fandoms I probably couldn't of/wouldn't have gotten into today, if I were started over fresh, but I don't regret them.

2020 answers days 5- 11

10. Besides deathfic, rape/non-con, what is something that, no matter the pairing, you nope out of when it comes to reading?

My original list of Underage, eyeball licking, and scat still stands, but I have gotten a bit pickier in the last few years in that it depends on who wrote it far more than the pairing or what it is. There are things a couple years ago, I would have read anytime anywhere that now, I am like, "no, I only trust these 4 writers to write that."

2020 answers days 5- 11

11. How open are you about being in fandom to your non-fandom friends/family?

If anything, I am less open than I used to be. It does not come up. There are people who think I have no interests or hobbies outside of knitting and my book clubs. If they already know, they already know, but they are not getting anything out of me. I have enough on my plate without the added judgement and ire. Though, one of my book clubs is very into my weird font of knowledge I can pull from. It's the graphic novel book club.

2020 answers days 5- 11

12. What is something you consider headcanon that was never truly resolved in canon?

I stand by my Kouga related natterings from 2020.

2020 answer

13. What is something you think fandom, as a whole, needs? Either literally, like a service, or figuratively, like a 'head slap'?

I am surprised that my 2020 answer is nearly verbatim what I was going to type now. The one thing I would add is media literacy classes for everyone.

2020 answers days 13 & 14

14. Watch this video (or just read the lyrics). What pairing does this song remind you of and why? (I did not include the links, but the song is "Superman" by Ronan Keating)

After a fresh listen and not looking at my 2020 answer, my first thought is Jack/Daniel (Stargate SG-1). Why is hard to describe. The first two verses could easily be said by either of them. "Well, I'm no Superman/But I'll love you the best I can" is a very Jack thing to say. The flying references. It just all kind of works.

This is apparently not any of the 3 pairings I listed in 2020! I only actually still agree with 1 of my 3 answers from back then. Go figure.

2020 answers days 13 & 14

15. When it comes to writing or art, what is your source for ideas/inspiration? Do you just brainstorm? Rely on talking to others? Workshop? Or do you hang out in prompting communities?

This answer remains unchanged.

2020 answer

Apparently there was a bonus question? I didn't find it when I was collecting the questions anew, but it was in my posts from when I did it in 2020: Bonus question 2020

I have a long standing goal to do ALL the June Somethings. This month, this year, I have decided to finally go for it.

These were originally meant to do over 15 days in June to help boost activity on DW during the summer when it is traditionally very slow.

[personal profile] squidgiepdx's The June Something 2019 Edition

1. We all have that ONE fandom, or OTP. But what would you consider your backup fandom? Bonus: Who is your backup OTP? Same fandom or different?

If I were to divide my fandoms into main, back up, and other; I guess my back up fandoms would be Merlin, Fullmetal ALchemist, and InuYasha. It's little sad because at one time InuYasha was unquestionably my main fandom.

Backup OTP: I have so many pairings, in so many fandoms, I'm not sure how I would filter between "main" and "backup." Best I can do is if I am looking for something to read late at night and I can't find whatever it is that I was looking for to scratch whatever itch I had, my next search is usually Dick Grayson/Jason Todd, Roy Harper/Jason Todd, or Ronon Dex/Rodney McKay. (Different fandoms)

2. If you were able to insert yourself into one fandom as your reality, what would it be? Bonus: How different would you be in that reality?

I'm not sure I'd survive any of my fandoms. (I just keep picturing a chibi version of myself in one of those claw machine claws, being carried around, looking for a place to drop me.)

In theory, I could be the most useful in Supernatural - I am excellent at research, I have survival skills, experience with guns, knife throwing, axe throwing, wood chippers, power tools, etc. Assuming I survive the first 5 minutes, I could probably find a niche.

However, Food Wars has more of an appeal. No dying. Ridiculous sexualization of food. I'd be fine.

3. What character do you think you would end up being best friends with? Bonus: What other character would you and your new bestie give a hard time to?

Friends might not be the right word, but I could be one of Rowena's worshipful underlings. Not a long life expectancy with that, but you know. Oh, we would be giving a hard time to literally everyone.

4. You get to crossover two completely different fandoms. What two shows, and why? Bonus: Give us a preview!

May I direct you to my AO3. It's probably the most common thing I write, crossovers. My favorites to do/have done are probably Avatar: The Last Aibender/Batman, Stargate Atlantis/Care Bears, InuYasha/Avatar: The Last Airbender, and a retail AU where I crossed over all of my fandoms,

5. You get to insert your favorite OTP into a new fandom. Who is the OTP, and what fandom? Bonus: Give us a preview!

See above. To be fair though, if I am just moving a pairing to do a fusion, I tend to plop them into horror movies. They don't always fair well. I've done it with most pairings I have at some point, but most recently it has been the unholy cluster fuck of Roy Harper/Dick Grayson/Jason Todd/Koriand'r (DC), John Sheppard/Rodney McKay (Stargate Atlantis), & Jack O'Neill/Daniel Jackson (Stargate SG-1).

6. What fandom that got a series finale was that most appropriate/most satisfying. Bonus: What about it would you have changed, if anything?

Um, do they ever? Logically, I do know it happens. I've even discussed good endings somewhere at some point. iZombie was wrapped nicely from what I remember. Leverage was also okay. Lately, it seems any time something was good/that had a good ending, got ruined by reboots and continuations. The bad part is, if they're good, I don't necessarily remember them...

7. What fandom that got a series finale was the LEAST appropriate/least satisfying. Bonus: How would you have fixed it?

...and if they are bad, I write fan fic. Frankly, if you want an unsatisfying ending, just throw a dart. The two that come to mind first are Supernatural and Stargate Atlantis, but they have both already been thoroughly ripped apart repeatedly elsewhere.

8. What is a fandom that you never thought you'd get into, but did? Bonus: How did you end up getting into it?

Honestly, Supernatural. I had a friend that was super into it from the beginning that would give me constant updates from day one until the season 5 finale, to the point where I felt like I was watching the show myself and could not summon any interest in it. However, her descriptions and recaps later turned out to be... not the best. Vexed got into the show during season 6 and spent that entire season dragging me into the show and fandom kicking and screaming. By the time season 7 was through, I was caught up enough to be watching the show as it aired and was firmly entrenched in the fandom.

9. What is the smallest fandom that you're in?

At one time, I would have said Blue Exorcist, but things fluxuate so much anymore, I'm not really sure. (I mean aside from essentially dead fandoms like Northern Exposure, but that finally got a home for streaming, so that may change.)

10. What is the largest fandom that you're in?

Unquestionably, Batman/DC comics

11. What is the fandom that you're in, but none of your fen are?

Our Flag Means Death. I try not to be obnoxious about it.

12. What fandom did everyone else get into, but you never did?

Game of Thrones. I have nothing against it, I just never summoned enough interest in it to even try it, the show or books, which is weird because you would think it would be right up my alley.

13. What do YOU consider fandom's "little black dress"? Is it a coffeeshop AU? Sharing a bed trope? Bonus, share your favorite example.

After rolling some dice to pick a fandom, Batman's little black dress is case fics. AU or canon, any pairing, that is the most common type of fic, even if it's not the main trope or even a listed trope of a fic, it works its way in. This is in no way surprising, but it is a thing.

14. Some long fics used to come with a playlist. What's a song that you were introduced to by something fannish, and what was it inspired by? Bonus: Share a link to the song/music.

I miss fics having playlists. I also miss the playlist from a certain fanfic that has been taken down and I don't want to mention the title of that I hopefully still have a PDF of somewhere.

I used to have my own long playlist of these kinds of songs, but that's gone now. Off the top of my head though:

"Every Time We Touch" by Cascada was ubiquitous in fandom for a long stretch. There was not a fandom or a pairing it seemed that did not have a fan video made with this song.

"When You Were Young" by The Killers. There was a heartbreakingly beautiful Samurai Champloo fan video made to this song that I used to watch over and over again. It's burned into my soul. Sometimes, I still try to find it again, but I'm fairly certain it disappeared off the internet.

Almost every Taylor Swift song I know is because of the Supernatural fandom.

The Supernatural fandom is also responsible for nearly all of my knowledge of Ke$ha songs, with the glaring exception of "Your Love is my Drug." That would be the fault of Avatar: the Last Airbender and Zuko/Sokka/Jet.

"Don't Trust Me" by 3OH!3 - I see you Naruto fandom and your unhinged behavior that helped form my early internet fandom years.

15. What is something you do today that you wouldn't be doing if not for fandom? Examples: Vacation with fellow fen, running a community, etc.

Simply even be on DW for one. I wouldn't have most of my friends and all the things we've done together over the years. I probably would have stopped writing. Book club would be far less fun. Frankly, to be probably, a little too honest, if it wasn't for fandom, I would probably be dead by now.

Challenge #8

Talk about a current fannish project (fic, art, vid, crochet, funko pop village) (that you are creating or enjoying)

I have a lot of fannish projects in varying stages of progress. These are the ones that are most present on my mind of late:

- I am actively working on adding to my crossover series'. I feel like I don’t give them enough love, despite being some of my favorite things to poke at. The most current ones are:

An Avatar: The Last Airbender/Batman crossover modern magic AU. Basically, magic and supernatural creatures are real, and it’s not really a secret, but it’s kind of ignored or looked down upon by larger “regular” human society. It’s there if you are looking for it, but most people aren’t. Bruce Wayne is a doctor at a free clinic by day and mad scientist by night, Alfred is something unspeakable and old, there is something really wrong with Dick but nobody talks about it, Tim has been recently turned into a vampire and hiding it, and Jason Todd is a werewolf that was adopted by Bruce and then resurrected Frankenstein style after he died. Most of the rest of the cast, including nearly all the AtLA characters, are magic users of various types, except Sokka. I have no idea what to do with Sokka. Most of the characters know each other by either being adopted by being part of the Wayne family or by going to the same exclusive school.

And

An Addams Family/Batman crossover kid fic AU, where Bruce Wayne and Wednesday Addams are the same age and neighbors (and have a crush on each other).

- I’ve been designing ornaments for a fandom themed holiday tree to reflect my multifandom-ness. Examples include: a small stocking that, in material and design, is inspired by the Stargate Atlantis off world uniforms with a ZPM in it and a garland that looks like Inuyasha’s beads of subjugation necklace. Though everything is in the planning stages.

Related to this, I’ve also been working on a strictly Good Omens themed mini tree. I have the white mini tree and I made a red snake garland for it, but it has some issues. The rest of the decorations were going to be made from shrink plastic, but I haven’t had time and resources to make them.

- Last year I started a junk journal of my year, that included tags of my fandoms of the year. Almost all of them are still in progress. Basically, they were paper tags styled after old school manilla tags and I drew related fanart on them. So far, there are ones for Wednesday, The Sandman, Hilde, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Invader Zim, and Moonstruck, but there are more to come.

- I have lengthy WIP that is a master list of all the Bat gadgets mentioned in the original 1960 Batman TV series, as well as another list of all of Dick Grayson’s hobbies and extracurricular activities. I am thinking of starting another one of all the committees Bruce is on.

- Speaking of lists, I also have one of all of the “periodic exclamations of surprise that also name-check women in history and the arts” in the Lumberjanes series in progress. (I had to quote someone on Good Reads to get the description right.)

There are more, but those are the big ones, I think.
